Chempion (Gorobets, 2019). Herbaceous hybrid. Seedling No. 4/92. Triple hybrid. Parentage: Variety obtained by crossing in 1984, P. lactiflora ‘Adolphe Rousseau’ x F1 (P. officinalis ‘Rubra Plena’ x P. peregrina). Seeds sown in 1984, from which ‘Chempion’ was selected as a seedling for propagation in 1992. Entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 2009. DOUBLE, flat form having rounded guard petals 1½-2 inches (3-5cm) wide, sometimes with an open center. One flower per stem, large, with a diameter of 5-7 inches (16-18 cm). Dark red-purple color does not burn out (RHS 59-B). On average 3 carpels, short, very hairy, greyed-yellow (RHS 160-D). Stigmas green-yellow (RHS 1-D) and of normal anatomy. Pollen-bearing stamens, filaments red, less than ½ inch. No seeds. Fragrance insignificant. Early to midseason bloom period. Dark green foliage, the leaves large, with broad lobes. Plant habit semi-spreading, though the stems are thick and durable and mechanical support not needed. Plant height 39 to 43 inches (100 to 110 cm). The cultivar is intended for cutting.
