Seedling A-3. Parentage: ‘America’ x ‘Golden Wings’. First bloomed 2010. First propagated 2012. SINGLE. Baby pink, fluted petals form an eight-inch (20 cm) massive flower of good substance. Color fades to cream with age. Average 4-5 carpels, green, moderately hairy. Stigmas red. Disc notched, pink with white tips. Filaments pale yellow, reddish at base. Blooms early season. Up to two sidebuds extend flowering. Not fragrant. Very fertile both ways, presumed tetraploid. Very large black seeds. Upright growth to 43 inches (110 cm), support not needed. Large leaflets, lanceolate, 8 inches (20 cm) long, 4 inches (10 cm) wide. Plant is robust, reliable and vigorous, a very satisfactory peony for the landscape wherever the size fits. Named after Professor Volker Schmidt, husband of Ruth Schmidt and former director of the Institute of Solid State Physics and Electron Microscopy in Halle, Germany, a very fine man and an avid gardener, deceased in 2012.
