A short update one temperature treatments for germination of peony seeds. As was noted a constant temperature was better than fluctuating temperatures. The seeds which went into the warm treatment later did show a difference in that the one that were left in my house at some 22-23°C had hardly made any progress and showed as good as no germination after 2-3 months time. Whereas the ones that were placed at a more moderate temperature of 18°C showed some 50% germination. After noticing that all seeds were moved towards 18°C, together with some new seeds. Now, again much later it seems that worked fine. The seeds that hadn’t germinated at the higher temperatures have now accomplished more or less the same proportion of germinated seeds as can be seen in the image (all from the same seed collection on the same cultivar plants). The older germinated ones are starting to show some root rot at the tips after such a long time, but normally they would have been place in cold storage already. What is noted is that no further germination has occurred within them, thus it has remained at some 50% germination. The later germinated ones in the other bags have also some 50% germination. That is ok, but far from the 85% germination I got when the warm treatment was started immediately (or very shortly) after harvesting. The older the seed, the less germination, it is well known. As mentioned I also started some fresh seeds I received collected late in the season in the wild. A much higher proportion of germination again, so if possible don’t let them dry out.
